Color Ideas For Small Kitchens

Folding Doors

In Bill Brockschmidt's 640-square-foot flat, the kitchen is located in the entry hall and camouflaged in the living room. "Building folding doors enabled us to change the entry to a mini-gallery once we amuse," Brockschmidt states. "We can also close off the dining room from the kitchen with pocket doors, in order that after we've arrived, we can open up the kitchen for cooking."

Sculptural Island

A small sculptural island sets an adventurous tone for this particular 400-square-foot Brooklyn apartment made by Fitzhugh Karol and Lyndsay Caleo of the The Brooklyn Home Company. Brancusi could have liked this island, made from a log painted white and fallen oak.

Matching Trim

In a 295-square-foot Brooklyn studio flat designed by Nick Olsen, the kitchen corner, done in green and white to blend in, has a helping of charm with grosgrain ribbon trim and a painted plaid backsplash.

Subway Tile

To pretend a sunny farmhouse kitchen at a Manhattan apartment, Celerie Kemble painted the cabinets Benjamin Moore's White Dove. The white-tiled walls, along with a chandelier and brass hardware, create the illusion of sunlight.

Moveable Bar

The galley kitchen in Juan Carretero's New York apartment includes two doorways, one of which opens directly into the living area. To acquire space that is counter -- and enhance the perspective -- a bar on casters crosses the gap.

Stovetop Shelf

To expand a very small kitchen in his San Francisco apartment, designer Scot Meacham Wood added additional shelves. The cabinetry is in Ralph Lauren Paint's Interior Semigloss in Scuba Black. The curtains are a Christopher Hyland plaid.

Pot Rack

Bulky pans may take up valuable real estate, therefore Katie Ridder installed Urban Archaeology's Industrial pot rack in a Greenwich Village duplex. The elegant barstools from Cherner Chair Company are a 1958 layout by Norman Cherner and so are padded in MK Collection's Summer Strié.

Thick Ledge

While our 2017 Kitchen of the Year didn't skimp on space, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruz used plenty of efficient tricks to max out the room. The chunky 11/4-inch-thick Caesarstone counter extends the wall up to the base of the window, making a spot for a soap dispenser (or wine glass).

Wicker Furniture

A custom Holland & Company farm dining table at a Georgetown rowhouse does double-duty as a dinner spot and work surface, whereas paneled appliances seamlessly blend in with the cabinetry in Benjamin Moore's White Dove. The actual illusion comes from Mainly Baskets from the form of woven seats. Designer Sarah Bartholomew proceeded to tie the space to the backyard, which makes the room feel airy instead of cramped, custom closet cabinets.

Dark Cabinetry

In a Manhattan apartment, the present kitchen cabinets were painted Benjamin Moore Aura in Black. "I wanted it to seem less boring and more such as a smart butler's pantry," designer Lilly Bunn states. The Roman shade is in Holland & Sherry's Belfour linen.
